How do I know if I have to see a psychologist?
People consult a psychologist after they have tried to deal with a difficult situation but
somehow they find themselves at an impasse. Are you feeling stuck? Do your emotions
feel too intense? Is your distress affecting your work and relationships? If your answer is
"yes" , you could benefit from consulting an objective human relations specialist. Many
mature, responsible individuals seek therapy to attain their fullest potential!
How do I know a psychologist is right for me?
It is a good idea to call two or three therapists and ask them some questions about
their experience, how they work, and what approach they use. What are your goals and
how does the therapist propose to meet them? Even though a therapist is capable and
licenced, a person may be more or less comfortable with a given professional's
personal style. After establishing competence, trust your intuition.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A psychologist is a mental health professional who has between 5 and 8 years of
specialized university education . The psychologist cannot prescribe medication but
works with a physician or psychiatrist when medication is needed. The psychiatrist has
a degree in medicine and completes a 4 year residency.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually the initial evaluation takes 2 or 3 visits. After this you will be able to receive more
detailed feedback concerning length of treatment. Each person is different with regard
to their particular needs so it is impossible to give you a precise answer over the
telephone.
What is my background?
I have worked in the medical and community (CLSC) sectors as a clinical psychologist
offering Cognitive Therapy, Brief Therapy and Solutions Oriented Therapy for the first
several years of my career . I organized and ran workshops on stress and
communication in couples. I began my private practice in 1992 specializing in helping
individuals with depression and anxiety. I also taught couples how to resolve conflict,
enhance intimacy and respect.
I have provided services for employee assistance programs such as Corporate Health
Consultants, Health Canada as well as Health Canada's Critical Incident Stress
Management Center, MUC Police and the RCMP.
I am intrigued at the way we often repeat the same patterns personally and in our close
relationships even if they don't work.! My keen interest led me to complete 4 years at
The Victoria Institute in Montreal focused on specialized diagnosis and treatment of
personality disorders. It is amazing that aspects of our own personality can sabotage us
without our full awareness. As we become more conscious, we can gradually alter our
old negative patterns, discover more freedom of choice, and feel more alive. Everyone
deserves peace of mind.
I believe in the incredible resilience of people, their own inherent wisdom and their
capacity for healing and personal evolution . Could I be the person to facilitate this
natural healing process in you with my active support, individualized coaching and
committed teaching?
